Psychotherapy
When most people think about psychotherapy, they imagine a person lying on a couch talking, while a bearded man sits quietly behind them scribbling on a pad of paper. Psychotherapy today is a much more varied and rich experience. At its heart, psychotherapy is about change. This includes changing how you feel, how you react, what you think about things (including yourself), and how you act in relationships. How this is accomplished is different for each type of therapy.
However, the structure of almost all therapies is basically the same. A person looking for help and a therapist meet regularly and discuss the difficulties that individual is experiencing. The focus is on the person's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors with an eye toward helping him or her make changes that will lead to a happier, more satisfying and productive life.
Below are links that offer some information about the different kinds of psychotherapy and the process of finding a therapist who is right for you. Since many people in psychotherapy might also be on medications, some information about antidepressants is included as well.
